AU Commission Chairperson: Decision Taken at 29th AU Summit on Sahara Issue “Still Valid”
The decision N 653 taken at the 29th African Union (AU) Summit, held in Addis Ababa in July 2017, on the Sahara issue, “is still valid and continues to serve as the reference,” Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said.
Speaking at the end of the 30th Summit of African Heads of State and Government, held in the Ethiopian capital, Mahamat underlined that Decision 653 “is still valid and continues to serve as the reference”.
The decision commends the appointment of Horst Köhler as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara and urges the African Union and the AU Commission to support the UN efforts aimed at reaching an agreement on a consensual and definitive solution to the conflict.
The text does not refer to any role or involvement of the AU in these efforts. It “also makes no reference to any outdated plan, obsolete formula of solution or instrumentalized principle”.
